Do these before you wait for anyone
A few minutes of action can be the difference between a repair and a rebuild.
If you smell gas, leave the building, do not touch light switches or appliances, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Call us afterwards, once you are safe and the supply is off.
If water is running and will not stop, close the main shut-off valve. It is usually near the street at the water meter, or on the wall where the supply enters the house. Then close the valve on the individual fixture if you can reach it.
If a water heater is leaking, shut off the cold supply at the top of the tank, and cut the gas or the breaker before anything else.
If sewage is backing up into more than one fixture, stop running water anywhere in the house, including the washing machine and dishwasher, because everything you send down adds to what comes up.
